Inquirer grapples with succession issue

THE Philippine Daily Inquirer held its annual stockholders’ meeting Thursday and reelected Alexandra Prieto-Romualdez president, amid rumors that she and her family are casting for someone to run the day-to-day operations of the privately-held, family-controlled newspaper empire.

The rumors even gained currency when Romualdez, for the second year in a row, listed in her annual report “productivity and succession planning” among the seven critical factors that she said the newspaper group has to address amid the tough circulation-and advertising climate.
Casino shows thunder

Despite local regulatory difficulties, the Philippine operations of Thunderbird Resorts have so far been showing the most promise of all the Third World investments of the California-based gaming group.
According to Thunderbird’s just-released financial report, the twin casino hotels in Binangonan and Poro Point posted $20.2 million revenues in 2006, compared with the $24.2 million reported by group leader Panama with its six casinos.

Local money remittance companies terribly upset by Western Union’s slashing the domestic remittance fee to only P1 per transaction are readying a predatory pricing complaint before the proper government authorities.
It is not clear if the putative complaint would ever prosper, since Western Union has obtained prior clearance from the Department of Trade and Industry to run the current promo for a month and a half up to May 31.
