Marcoses on the offensive
July 30, 2007

Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and Jr.
THERE is a simple explanation as to why the Marcoses are only now going after Lucio Tan, Gilberto Duavit, and other so-called cronies of the late president.
The Marcoses have just obtained a treasure trove of documents– US-certified copies of shares of stocks, titles, and documents seized from the Marcoses after they landed in Hawaii in February 1986, as well as similar papers presented by the Federal Bureau of Investigation during a 1990 New York trial.
Under-performing lawyers

The paper trail behind the collapsed Performance Investment Products Corp. which victimized Manila’s beso-beso crowd has now led to the Picazo Buyco Tan Fider and Santos law firm.
According to SEC papers, Performance was originally one of those shell corporations that big law firms incorporate for ready-use by clients looking for instant corporate vehicles.

“It is (the three lawyers’) despicable behavior which gives lawyering a bad name…’ wrote the ponente, Justice Renato Corona. “They could not charge (Dr. Pineda) a fee based on percentage, absent an express agreement to that effect.”
PINEDA
The three partners had represented the pioneering dermatologist in the successful annulment case filed by Pineda’s wife. Later, it was Pineda’s turn to sue them after the three demanded a 10-percent share, or P50 million, of the doctor’s conjugal half. Read the rest of this entry »
Smart-Globe mobile TV war
July 27, 2007
The Big 3 broadsheets were rubbing their hands with glee, after receiving 6-8 pages of full-page color ads from Smart Wednesday to announce the latter’s mobile TV service.
But, to the letdown of the papers’ advertising departments, the answer from Globe was decidedly muted, when the Ayala-controlled telecom company placed only one full-page ad in just one daily yesterday.
And, in a shift from its traditional market target, Globe’s mobile TV service was oriented downmarket, from its pay-per-use fee of P5 a minute, to the choice of TV channels, ABS-CBN and GMA, plus CNN and two others. Read the rest of this entry »
