Araneta wife, kids snagged in $25-m California dispute
August 31, 2007
THE wife and kids of LBC Group owner Carlos Araneta have all now been snagged in the nasty monetary feud in California between the family patriarch and his erstwhile partners ATR-Kim Eng.
Araneta’s wife, Consuelo, as well as all their children Juan Carlos, Santiago, Fernando, and Monica, were deposed last week in Makati by a California lawyer hired by ATR-Kim Eng in its efforts to collect about $25 million from Araneta and his LBC Group in the United States.
Araneta’s daughter, Monica, a part-time model, is particularly vulnerable to the US suit since she was supposed to have acquired the Hillsborough property from an Araneta family corporation, on the eve of a bankruptcy proceeding, for only $100.
Malu Antoinette
August 31, 2007
The editors and management of this newspaper have been besieged and importuned to join the heated discussion by all sorts of parties and characters, for reasons ranging from noble to ignoble, who think that lifestyle columnist Malu Fernandez is the Philippine version of France’s Marie Antoinette.
Despite our private, aching desires as journalists to explain the Malu Fernandez affair, the Manila Standard Today adheres to a certain set of protocols that prevent us from publicly discussing personnel issues.
The deeply-fractured Couples for Christ is calling for a worldwide congress on September 8 in a last-ditch effort to prevent the split of the charismatic middle-class movement into the Frank Padilla and Tony Meloto camps.
To be held at the Amoranto Stadium in Quezon City, the CfC members plan to ask the seven-member CfC council to resign if the reconciliation efforts still fail, and then call for new council elections with both Meloto and Padilla being asked to stay away from the exercise.

A $200-laptop
ASUSTEK is launching next month a $200, seven-inch laptop aimed at developing world, and we here at the Manila Standard Today are among the legions particularly excited about the economic and productivity breakthroughs when technological marvels intersect with affordability.
At that price point, the ultra-mobile offering from the Taiwanese manufacturer becomes an everyday commodity, much like what had cell phones had become even to Third World office workers.
It is quite embarrassing to admit, but, except for the big boys, the local newspaper industry could not even afford to provide laptops for their reporters, who had to rely on the proximity of internet cafes not only to write and email their stories, but also to conduct daily background research.
The advent of $200-laptops should even the playing field.
Wanted: White knight
August 29, 2007
The struggling Philippine Chronicle is trying to find a white knight to pump some needed cash into the newspaper venture.
Among those supposed to have already been approached were former Customs Commissioner, now key Lucio Tan-executive, Salvador Mison and newsprint supplier Henry Lim.
According to the grapevine, Chronicle principal Noel Carino has refused to provide more funding for the daily, considering that the Fil-Estate executive had already spent about P60 million in his failed congressional bid in Pasig. Read the rest of this entry »
